Dal Fry | Dhall Fry

Share with friends and family

Dal fry practically needs no introduction as it is one of the simplest ,yet tastiest preparation that can be made in one's kitchen without much fuss and very minimal ingredients readily available in our pantry.
Well, having said that ,all of you must be wondering why is there a need to blog this recipe if it is so simple and staple?
Well, the answer is - this recipe is very close to my heart as it is one of those preparations by my mom which I have fallen in love with ever since my childhood and coincidentally this has been the only recipe which I actually learnt step by step from my mom. As I was making this today , I realised that a very important recipe has not been blogged in my page ,so without further delay and also as a tribute to the recent event of Mother's Day, I am recording it here .

Preparation Time - 10 mins
Cooking Time - 20 mins
Complexity- simple
Serves - 2 -3

Dal fry , fried dal , no onion no garlic dal fry , ghee dal fry , dhalll fry, bachelor cooking, easy dal fry , easy dhall fry, cooking under 20 mins

Ingredients
1 cup moong dhall / yellow split lentil
2-3 green chillies slit
1tsp ginger finely chopped
1 tsp cumin / jeera
Few curry leaves
2 tablespoon ghee
Pinch of turmeric
Salt to taste
Pinch of asafoetida
Coriander for garnish

Method

  • Wash the dhall and soak for about 5 mins and the drain it.
  • In a pressure cooker, heat the ghee and splutter the jeera followed by green chilies, ginger, curry leaves and asafoetida.
  • Saute the drained dhall with haldi until you get a mild nutty flavor.
  • Add sufficient water to cook the dhall until mushy .Quantity of water depends on the quality of the dhall you use .
  • Adjust salt as needed and pressure cook for 3-4 whistles and turn off .
  • Once the pressure has settled down, open the cooker, mash the dhall well and if it appears too thick add some warm water and get it to the desired consistency.  You can adjust salt at this stage if you need to.
  • Heat 1 tsp ghee in a small pan, add about 1/2 red chilli powder and asafoetida to the ghee and pour it over the dhall . This step is optional but it definitely adds up to the flavor and taste of the dhall .garnish with coriander.
  • Serve hot with jeera rice, pulao, plain rice or even hot fulkas .
